The syntax is easy to forget and even easier to mistype.

Receiving mail at a @duck.com address is seamless. Sending mail, however, requires a specific recipient format. For example, to email friend@gmail.com from your alias tomjones@duck.com, the recipient field must be formatted like this:

friend_at_gmail.com_tomjones@duck.com

You then send the email to this generated address from the account linked to your DuckDuckGo alias. For instance, if your linked address is jones@example.com, you would send the message to friend_at_gmail.com_tomjones@duck.com from jones@example.com.

The utility runs entirely client-side and all processing happens in your browser. No data is stored, shared, or transmitted to any server.

To scoop into a few more details, the search engine DuckDuckGo runs a free email forwarding service that provides privacy-focused addresses at the duck.com domain. Its goal is to prevent email tracking and profiling by stripping hidden trackers from incoming messages and hiding your primary email address.

You can also create unique aliases for different websites, which helps identify who is sharing or leaking your data and makes it easier to block spam. These aliases are especially useful when signing up for random newsletters and less important services.

Although it is not a standalone email provider, DuckDuckGo Email Protection allows you to both receive and send emails using your @duck.com address. Incoming messages are forwarded to your linked email address (for example, Gmail or any other provider). You can also send emails from your aliases without revealing your linked email address. This is a useful feature when communicating with people or services you’d rather not share your real address with.

To simplify sending emails from a @duck.com alias, I built a small web utility that handles the required “send-to” address formatting.
